A Passion for Beds
The Best-Kept Secret in the Bedroom
Story by Debra Kronowitz | Photos courtesy of Hästens
Imagine sinking into a luxury bed for a
heavenly night’s sleep, knowing that the Swedish royal family has been
enjoying this type of handmade mattress for the past 50 years.
Such is the case with the Hästens bed, whose intricate craftsmanship and
elaborate detail reflect the commitment and passion of the master
craftsmen at Hästens for the past 150 years.
Founded in 1852, Hästens is Sweden’s oldest bed manufacturer whose
humble roots began with the manufacture of saddles and carriage
furniture. The company came to the United States eight years ago with
the mission to improve the sleeping habits of its customers. Hästens has
already established showrooms in 13 states, with more expansion slated
in the near future. |

In an industry where most manufacturers
focus on cost, Hästens has kept its focus on quality. Although its
handmade beds cost anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000 — with custom beds up
to $65,000 — the company’s attention to detail makes an important
difference. Unlike most beds, often constructed with man-made materials
like latex, rubber and foam, Hästens beds are made from completely
organic components, including horsehair, cotton, flax, wool and pine.
“The natural materials allow the bed to breathe, unlike most beds,” said
Jacob Koo, owner of Hästens on Beverly in the Avenues of Art & Design
West Hollywood. “We perspire at night. The horsehair wicks moisture
away, basically causing it to evaporate.”
Each bed is handmade, step by step, and comes with a 25-year warranty.
Master craftsmen process the horsehair, stitch, cut and tack, while the
fabric is measured, outlined and cut. The fabric sections are then sewn
with precision, down to the millimeter. “There is so much work that goes
into making these beds,” said Koo.
The result: thick, heavy, high-quality beds available in six models and
considered a lifetime investment. Hästens beds include well-constructed
bed frames made of Swedish pine that is allowed to grow at its natural
pace, making the material as strong as possible. Options include the
frame bed, where the mattress and box spring are combined into one piece
in a wood frame with a removable pillow topper; the continental bed,
which includes a springy bottom section, a thick spring mattress and a
top mattress for even greater softness in awood frame; and the
adjustable bed. The difference between the models is based on the number
of comfort layers inside, and of course, the price increases with the
layers.
Hästens beds come in standard U.S. sizes, and custom “in-between” sizes
are available by special order. Firmness choices are soft, medium and
firm, although each side of the bed can be customized for personal
preference. Customers also receive their choice of fabric covering and
legs for the frame. Hästens also sells accessories, including pillows,
mattress protectors, linens, headboards and comforters. |
