In Pursuit of the Perfect Tile
Ann Sacks Delivers Eco-Friendly Beauty and Luxury
Story by Frances Albán | Photos courtesy of Ann Sacks
A medium of artistic expression since the third
millennium B.C., tile and mosaics have defined cultures for generations,
often bearing testimony to ancient traditions over the centuries. Dating
back to the Bronze Age, beautifully tiled surfaces reflecting handmade
textures have been discovered in ancient ruins of Greek cities and even
in the oldest of pyramids.
Although tiles today still reflect textures that look antique, authentic
and decorative, their overall appearance, production and utility has
drastically changed. One of the most celebrated manufacturers and
designers, Ann Sacks, has taken its evolution one step further by using
renewable resources and recycled content to create a more
environmentally friendly tile production process.
“We have seen substantial growth in the ’green’ category and have also
seen a marked increase in the number of inquiries about what
eco-friendly products are available,” said Sheri Hirschfeld, showroom
manager.
Ann Sacks is prepared for consumers with green agendas. Samplings of
relevant offerings, in order of popularity, include: Savoy Collection
– A runway hit since its
introduction last year, these recycled ceramic mosaics offer tremendous
design flexibility thanks to multiple formats and an extensive palette
of unique glazes.
Inca – Made from 100% recycled aluminum, these metal tiles exhibit a
beautiful rustic quality due to their hand-polished finish, giving them
a cool and modern appearance.
Profile Mosaics – This glass collection is partially composed of
pre- and post-consumer recycled glass. Each glass relief creates visual
impact as light and shadow play upon the unusual surface shapes.
Andy Fleishman Concrete – Available in square and hexagonal tile
shapes, this concrete flooring by designer Andy Fleishman uses grout
filled into scored surfaces to create a patterned look. The flooring,
composed of sand, gravel and cement with no chemical additives, is
available in a variety of designs.
Mesquite – Bringing the beauty of the outdoors inside, Ann Sacks
Mesquite tiles from Texas add warmth to any residential or
commercial setting. Three finishes include natural, natural with UV
protection and walnut.
Terra Cotta – Four distinctive French terra cottas are available:
Antique Lansen, Antique Parefeuille, Antique Terra Cotta Light and
Antique Terra Cotta Dark – all

derived from reclaimed ceiling materials found in 19th-century stables
in France. |
